Comparison: Smart Speakers

07 May 2018

If you are considering a voice assistant enabled speaker for your living room, there are a lot of great options out there. Devices such as the Google Home, Amazon Echo, Sonos One or the Apple HomePod are all great options. However, with such great offerings it is sometimes hard to decide which speaker to buy.

We have outlined some of the features of the 4 most popular smart speakers and created a quick comparison guide to highlight some of the best features of each speaker. With this article we hope that you can find out which smart speaker is the best for you.

Sonos One – Smart Software

Renowned for their home media systems and audio solutions, the Sonos One is no exception to Sonos’ excellent line-up. Built with music in mind, the Sonos One connects to over 49 different streaming services such as Spotify, Pandora or even Amazon Music streaming. This gives users the freedom of choice and an extremely extensive library of music to choose from.

Sonos also included a couple of useful music related software tweaks for the Sonos One. With a unique feature called “Trueplay”, users would be able to utilize their phone and analyse the acoustics of the room. It later uses AI learning and perfectly adjusts how each woofer and tweeter produces sound.

With such an expansive selection of music services and useful features such as Trueplay, the Sonos One is perfect for anyone who is passionate about their tunes and loves the ability to pick what they want.

Google Home – Smart Assistant

With Google expanding on their vision of creating a smart assistant powered world, the Google Home is one of their latest offerings that features the powerful Google Assistant. Built into the Google Home series of devices, Google Assistant replaces the now defunct Google Now feed and provides a much smarter way of handling enquires.

Unlike its competitors, Google Home uses the powerful Google search and machine learning to execute and lookup enquires. This means quicker response times to almost anything you ask. In addition to this, Google also recently implemented the ability to create and execute custom commands.

With such a comprehensive smart assistant experience it is hard not to recommend this to people looking for a powerful and all-rounded smart assistant.

Apple Homepod – Smart Audio

The Apple HomePod is the hallmark of a superbly made smart speaker that focuses on reproducing the best audio quality possible. The Apple HomePod features both hardware and software that help enhance the quality of your music.

Features such as the 6 microphones that help with spatial awareness for better sound quality, the 7-tweeter array and the high excursion sub-woofer all add to the deep rich sound that the HomePod produces.

Coupled with the deep integration with the Apple ecosystem, the HomePod works seamlessly with any iOS enabled device.

A perfect companion for any iOS users with a love of high quality audio.

Amazon Echo 2nd Generation – Smart Shopping

The Amazon Echo is the latest in the Echo line-up. With a much smaller form factor than the previous generation, the new Amazon Echo is more compact and features more styling options than the previous generation.

Despite the much smaller form factor, the capabilities of the new Amazon Echo are as powerful as ever. With access to Amazon’s expansive shopping network, users would have the ability to purchase or add items into their shopping cart. No longer would you have to step out of the house, the Amazon Echo is perfect for users who prioritize convenience the most!

Whether you are getting the HomePod from Apple, Google Home, the Amazon Echo or even the Sonos One, all these options are extremely good quality speakers that have incredible features.

If you are someone who prefers having the freedom of picking your Music service then the Sonos One is definitely for you. For audio lovers out there, there is no better speaker than the Apple Homepod. However, if having a smart assistant or having access to the world’s largest home shopping network then the Google Home or the Amazon Echo would fit you the best.

It is going to be up to you to decide which speaker would fit your needs the best.

Comparison: Fitness Smart Watches

23th April 2018

Fitness Watches from companies like Apple and Samsung are becoming more feature rich and is an increasingly affordable way for people to keep track of their fitness metrics. However, the right fitness watch will be based on your individual needs and what you are looking for in a watch.

We have taken the time to break down 2 of the most popular fitness watches and sort them by their distinct advantage. With this guide we hope you can make a well-informed decision on what is best for you.

Samsung Gear S3 Frontier – Most Durable Fitness Watch

Crafted from stainless steel, the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier is a well-built watch that stands out with it’s phenomenal build quality. Although it is slightly heavy at 63 grams, the hefty feel and the ruggedness of the design gives the S3 Frontier a certain reassurance that it would last in the most extreme conditions.

Coupled with the military grade certification, the Gear S3 Frontier is capable of handling dust, heavy rain or even extreme temperatures. It has even been certified to withstand drops from 4.9 feet, giving you the assurance that this watch would last in the elements.

A perfect watch for anybody who loves trekking or need just an extremely durable fitness watch.

Apple Watch Series 3 – Most Connected Fitness Watch

The Apple Watch has always been the leading industry standard when it comes to smartwatches. As a fitness watch, Apple retains one significant advantage that most other competitors are unable to replicate: The App Store ecosystem.

With the largest app offering in the world, the Apple Watch is instantly connected to multiple services downloaded on your iPhone. Whether it is your favourite music player or a workout app, the tight integration with iOS brings one of the most seamless experience on a fitness watch. Services such as Apple Health, Maps or even Nike’s Training Club provides a level of integration that other manufacturers are unable to recreate.

Coupled with the new battery enhancements found in the Apple Watch Series 3, it is hard to recommend another watch for anyone looking for such an integrated experience.

In conclusion, all these options are extremely respectable but it all boils down to what your individual needs are. A person who is constantly in the wilderness might prefer the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier while a person who value the integration of services might prefer the Apple Watch Series 3.

It would be up to you to decide which fitness watch suits you and your fitness habits the best.

Product Review: Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+

- Next Gen Upgrades in a Familiar Chassis

9th April 2018

The Galaxy S8 and S8+ have been the benchmark of the perfect phone. With a gorgeous 18:9 display, a high performance low-light camera, IP68 resistance and a headphone jack; the two flagship phones ticked a lot of the boxes to what people looked for.

In March 2018, Samsung released their next generation phones: The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ which supersedes the S8 and S8+. With a lot of subtle or under the hood changes, the Galaxy S9 and S9+’s exterior remained reminiscent of its predecessor, drawing complaints that there isn’t a significant upgrade.

However, as other smartphone manufacturers started to slowly catch up to Samsung’s innovative design, would the iterative design keep the Galaxy S9 and S9+ in the shadow of its competitors or would it once more take the spot of being best smartphones of this year?

1. Camera

One of the biggest upgrades to the Galaxy S9 is the substantial change to the already powerful low light camera. While other smart phone manufacturers have used a “fixed aperture” lens for all their phones, the Galaxy S9 series is able to switch between the “wide-open” f/1.5 lens to the much sharper f/2.4 lens with their “dual aperture” technology.
What this means is that while shooting in f/1.5, you get a much wider hole for light to travel through; working almost like a human eye to adjust to dark or bright conditions. This significantly improves camera performance in situations where there is not a lot of light.

However, using a f2.4 aperture also has its benefits. With a smaller aperture, photos are usually a lot more detailed and sharp. Samsung has used an innovative mixture of software and hardware to determine which aperture to use based on your current lighting conditions.

Unlike the previous model, the S9+ also sports a new telephoto camera that unlocks Live Focus; Samsung’s version of Portrait Mode. This isn’t found in the regular S9.

Imaging processing also improved with Samsung taking note of Google’s success. This year they have based their own solution on Google’s HDR+ algorithm to reduce image noise. Like what we covered in our previous article, the Galaxy S9 also uses a burst of multiple images and combines them with machine learning to create a sharper and noiseless picture. You can read more on the computational technique that they used over here .

2. Audio

One of the biggest complaints about the Galaxy S8 and S8+ was the solo bottom firing speaker. For the Galaxy S9, the speakers have been upgraded to a bottom and front facing combo that Samsung touted to be 1.4 times louder than what was found in the S8.

Coupled with the AKG tuned sound profile and Dolby Atmos enhancements, media consumption on the phone is nothing short of amazing. The 3D sound produced by the speakers are crisp and loud and the decision to retain the headphone jack provides a more consumer friendly experience that many people would appreciate.

3. Display

The new Infinity Display has also received an upgrade in efficiency and colour reproduction. With this new generation display, Samsung reduced some of the issues that plagued the early models of the S8.

Complaints such as an overbearing redness in low brightness and an inaccurate portrayal of the colour white was resolved with the S9 and S9+. To date, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ is considered to be one of the most colour accurate displays on the market. Media such as movies and TV shows would look crisp and vibrant as it also complies with HDR video specifications. A true gem of a screen for any media lovers out there.

4. Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ is an extremely compelling device for anybody looking to upgrade their current device. With these two devices focusing on refining their pros and reducing their cons, the S9 and S9+ takes already what was great about the previous generation phones and improves it further. A truly outstanding phone for 2018.

Tips on How to Get Started with Aerial Photography Using Your Drone

26th March 2018

The different perspective offered by drones can be used to create memorable moments and the coming summer vibe is harder to recreate than any other time of the year. If you are looking to get into aerial photography then eGlobal Central has a couple of starting tips for you.

1.Pick A Drone with Decent Camera Capabilities

Drones are becoming more commonly used in professional photography and more photographers are using them to obtain shots that weren’t possible before.

Out of the many drones, the DJI Mavic Air is one of the best choice that can suit many hobbyist or enthusiasts’ aerial photography needs.

The superbly engineered drone is not only easy to control, foldable and ultraportable, but features a 1/2.3” 12-megapixel CMOS sensor and an f/2.8 lens with a 35-mm equivalent focal length of 24 mm which offers great low light performance comparable to other drones in the market.

There are other great alternatives but drones such as Mavic Air simply packs great value for its rich and powerful specifications.

2. Keeping Lighting Conditions in Mind

Like any other type of photography, the key thing is to keep lighting in mind. With drones, you have access to an extremely intelligent gimbal system. In addition to improving video smoothness, a gimbal would also help prevent shakiness in situations where there is very little ambient light.

This means shots that feature sunsets, sunrises, or late nights would look stunning in most aerial locations.

Another thing you could do, is to pick a drone with good low -light performance. The DJI Mavic Air comes with easy to use bracketing software you can use to create High Dynamic Range (or HDR) photographs. Although it does take a bit of processing with the built-in software, the end results often look like it was taken with a much higher end camera.

3. RAW is King

Like traditional photography, the best way to shoot is in RAW format. With RAW you have the ability to correct errors without a significant decrease in quality.

Even though you should always aim to “get it right in camera.” RAW formatting allows you a second chance to get the shot you want – the first chance is when you take the picture; the second chance is when you edit the picture inside the RAW converter. With the DJI Mavic Air you would be combining a great sensor with the flexibility of RAW image.

4. Flying Area and Conditions

It is always recommended to choose a safe and open area to fly a drone. Even though the Mavic Air is portable enough to traverse in urban settings or tight spots; it is generally not recommended due to the risks of collisions and injuries. Whenever you fly a drone, the optimal place would be an open area with little to none tall structures in your immediate surroundings.

5. General Security and Safety - Check Up on By-laws and Etiquette

With tighter regulations implemented by government organisations around the world, it is often hard to know what is the proper etiquette for flying a drone. Here are some of the regulations most entities have in common:

• You have to keep your drone within Visual Line of Sight or VLOS
• You have to fly below 300 to 400 feet
• Drones should not be flown over airports or near active airspace
• Drones should not be flown over large crowds, sport stadiums or events

To ensure a safe flying experience, please check your local by-laws with the aviation regulatory body in the region.

4 Easy Ways to Free Up Space on Your Android Phone

12th March 2018

With the age of 4K video files, high resolution pictures, Netflix downloads, and high-fidelity music – it’s very easy to start hitting your storage limit on your Android phone. Here are 4 easy tips to help you reclaim some storage space from your mobile device.

Uninstalling Unused Applications

We all know about that folder of applications that has been sitting on your home screen collecting proverbial dust. You haven’t even clicked on it for months and every so often you see an update for one of them in the Play Store. Instead of allowing these apps to waste precious storage with each update; uninstall them and do your phone a much-needed favour.
Although each app is quite small in size, you will be surprised how much junk files each one collects.

Clearing Cache

Clearing cache is a temporary solution for a low storage issue. By clearing Application Cache, you can temporarily remove junk files that may not be needed anymore. It’s a quick and easy way to do it, but in the end these cached files provide a quicker experience for your Android device.

On most phones you can clear out your Application Cache through the storage page in Settings.

Backing Up and Removing Your Pictures Through Google Photos

One of the best application that’s flying under the radar is the free Google Photos app from the Play Store. Available for both iOS and Android, Google Photos offer unlimited backups for all your pictures and videos in stunning high-resolution.

Google Photos also knows what content has already been backed up and is safe to clear off of your device. Just tap the “remove” button and quickly free up space for your next application download.

Moving Data to Your SD Card

With the SD card slot becoming a rare sight these days, there are only a few phones left with removable storage. However, if you are the lucky few to still own a phone that comes with one - you can always add extra storage for a fraction of the price of a new phone.

If you have a SD card, you could move downloaded media from apps such as Netflix, Spotify or Amazon Prime Video by specifying their storage location. This gives you the liberation of having plenty of free space for games and apps, while having all your media downloaded with just a small purchase.

5 Hacks to Bring Your Tablet Back to Life

Just got a new tablet from the holidays? Wondering if you should send your old one to the farm? Well have no worries, here are 5 cool hacks to make use of an old tablet that you don’t use anymore.

A Second Desktop Monitor

There are so many situations in which two things are better: Two plates of nachos, two houses, two dogs and now: two monitors.

With just a simple app, you’ll be able to extend your workspace in no time.

iPad - Duet Display: https://www.duetdisplay.com/

A Budget Voice Control Hub

Want the modern convenience of yelling your thoughts out to a virtual assistant but can’t justify the price tag on the HomePod or Google Home?

Well aside from the 360-degree speaker and the improved microphone, your smartphone or tablet can pretty much do the same thing. With the same voice commands and service tie in, an old tablet can be used to simulate virtual assistant response.

A Dedicated Multimedia Control Panel

In the age of Chromecast, Roku and Apple TV, we are now moving away from traditional cable TV on to on-demand content. The unused tablet can be a replacement remote control which allows for quick and easy way to control your Netflix, Spotify or Pandora steaming. The screen is much larger than your smartphone and the flat screen as well as the light weight makes it easy to store and use.

An unused tablet is always perfect for those comfy nights with the whole family snuggled on the couch.

A Budget Baby Monitor

With just WIFI, camera, and a microphone, anybody can repurpose their unused tablets to be a fairly decent budget baby monitor. It may not be a complete replacement for a baby monitor but for those tight on budget, the unused tablet can also do the job fine.

Home Automation on the Cheap

If your home is filled to the brim with smart appliances such as the Nest thermostat, Philips Hue bulbs or even a Griffin Connected Toaster, you’re probably already using your smartphone to control some if not all of your devices.

So why not install all those connected apps on to your tablet, plug it in and mount it on your wall? Now instead of a coaster, you have a smart hub to control your house.

Google’s Low-Light Magic:

Next Level Smartphone Pictures

12th February 2018

While smartphone cameras are steadily starting to replace many point-and-shoot cameras, there is still one aspect where they lag behind: Low-Light Shots. Even with the latest technology, smartphones are still constrained by their tiny sensors; resulting in less than favorable pictures.

However, with a couple of ingenious software tweaks, a Google employee pushed smartphones further than ever before. He created a smartphone that can make shots which were similar to what you could get out of a DSLR.

Inspired by the existing framework already paved by another Google researcher, Florian Kainz managed to take the existing code from the SeeInTheDark app and further improved on it for photography. Instead of taking just one picture, the application that he developed would take up to 64 shots in quick succession. Also, with the manual controls built-in in the app, he was able to fine-tune parameters such as ISO, exposures, and focus.

The actual process is quite simple. With a couple of simple stacks in Photoshop and a bit of post-processing, Kainz created a smartphone that was able to capture photos of astonishing quality.

Don’t expect this feature to be built into any new smartphones in the market anytime soon. The app that Kainz used was only an experimental version of the software already found in the Google’s Pixel series. Hopefully, in the near future, Google would allow other manufacturers to license this amazing technique into their own camera software.

With that being said, the current Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL feature an outstanding low-light shooting experience due to a variation of this software found in its HDR+ mode. Even without any modification the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL produces high-quality images in low light conditions compared to DSLRs.

Pushing the Canon 5D Mark IV and the 6D Mark II to their Low Light Limits

18th January 2018

With almost twenty years of experience under his belt, Phil Hart is a world-renowned photographer that specializes in capturing the wonders of the night sky. Earlier this year he braved the frontiers of Northern Canada and captured the Aurora Borealis. With just the Canon 5D Mark IV and the 6D Mark II, these two cameras were pushed to their absolute limit in the freezing cold.

When using the 5D Mark IV, the video was shot at max ISO of 32,000. Although the 1080p footage were a little noisy at first, it was quickly cleared up with the help of Adobe After Effects. Coupled with the deliciously wide Canon and Sigma ART lenses, the untouched files were still extremely usable given the sensors that were used.

The Canon 6D Mark II was also used to capture the auroras in 4K. With a tiny touch up on brightness and contrast in Adobe Premiere Pro, the footage looked like it was shot in a much higher end camera.

Since the aurora only lasted for a couple minutes, you need to be fully prepared even before shooting. Not only was the high ISO compensated with the noise reduction plugin: Neat, you also have to make sure that you

To gain similar results with pictures you could follow these steps:

1.       Make sure you are in a dark environment; the darker the better

2.       Get yourself a tripod, wide aperture lens and a remote trigger

3.       Shoot at long exposures a low ISO or high ISO with low exposure. (Be warned: Higher ISOs
          generally mean nosier pics)

4.       Tune noise and colours in Adobe Photoshop

Hands on Review of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8

One of the hottest gadgets to come out this year is of course the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. With the familiar smoothly curved body of last year’s Note 7, the Note 8 retains the same amazing design language albeit with a few noticeable upgrades. First of all is of course the dual camera system. With many manufacturers coming out with their own method of managing two cameras, the Galaxy Note 8 has opted for the “zoom” implementation. With the zoom lens, you are now able to zoom and take surprisingly stable shots (thanks to the OIS on both cameras) and a new Portrait Mode-like functionality called Live Focus. However, this is just one of the many upgrades that Samsung has brought to the Note 8. Here are some of the other features that we feel that deserves a special mention.

The Infinity Display

This year like for the rest of their flagships, Samsung has opted to upgrade the Note line-up with the new aspect ratio found in the Galaxy S8 series. With the Infinity Display (as awarded the best smartphone screen in our 2017 flagship comparison) covering the front of the phone and the bezels melting to what seems like thin air. The AMOLED display is true work of art. Known for their eye popping colours and the market leading contrast ratios, Samsung’s displays are known for their outstanding quality and accuracy. Now the Note 8 further improves on that by making their display brighter and more accurate than ever.
With a whopping 1240 nits or 75% brighter than the iPhone 7 display, the increased brightness makes images and text easier to read in direct sunlight. Furthermore, the Note 8 is also able to push the display to very low brightness levels, sending the display only down to 2 nits, making it more comfortable to use at night or in the dark.

Water Resistance

Another huge bonus for most people out there is the IP rating. For those who don’t know what it is, the IP rating stands for how “sealed” a phone is. For instance, the iPhone X is IP 67 rated while the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is rated at an IP 68 Certification, meaning that it is both dustproof and submergible underwater for 30 minutes.
It might not sound like much but for those rare accidents where something does spill on your phone, you’ll breathe a sigh of relief when it comes out just a little bit stickier. Best of all, it does it with the headphone jack still there.

Battery and Charging

Battery life has always been a strong point for Samsung phones in the past. With all the new power saving features of Samsung Experience and the improvements in battery technology, the Note 8 is now able to last you longer in both day to day use and in the general lifespan of the phone. With a 3,400 mAh battery, the Note 8 can comfortably last heavy users for a full work day and even light users for more than a day. Samsung also promises that the battery will not lose its capacity as quickly as previous generations, making your investment last a lot longer.

However, if the battery doesn’t cut it for you, you can top it up quickly with Samsung’s Adaptive Fast Charge. With Adaptive Fast Charge, you’ll be able to top up your Note 8 for a day’s use in 45 minutes. Did I mention that there’s wireless fast charge as well?

Samsung Experience and S-Pen

With all these new features, how is the software experience on the phone? Although previously, Touchwiz UX has always been on the slow side, Android Nougat has really breathed new life into Samsung devices. With further optimisations brought on by Samsung, the new “Samsung Experience” on Android 7.1.1 is something truly special. Buttery smooth and packed with features such as Live Focus in the camera, animated messages, Edge UX and of course the S-Pen optimisations. The S-Pen brings an unapparelled stylus experience to phones, with an almost ridiculous amount of pressure levels and Note specific productivity tweaks such as Live Messages and Screen-Off Memo. Every feature brings something new to the Note line-up, giving it a balance of productivity and fun to the device!

DJI Mavic Pro  VS  DJI Spark

Let’s get the most obvious point out of the way first. The Spark will run you around £350 to £380 and the Fly More combo (we will discuss this further later) will run you £530 to £560. However, the Mavic Pro will take the price to £790 to £830, almost double the DJI Spark. The Fly More combo will cost £980 to £1020.

Advantages of the Spark

1.       Size

One of the best and most obvious features of the Spark is the small size. While it is flying, it takes very little space and can fit in tight areas. Due to its small size and weight, the drone is also more quieter and much more discreet. Being so small, the Spark is easy to take around and can fit into smaller bags.

2.       Convenience

Besides being so small, the Mavic can also be flown without a dedicated DJI controller. You can fly the little drone off your phone. This means that you don’t even need to lug your controller around. Even without a phone, the Mavic has basic gesture controls allowing you to control the drone to move, take a selfie and even return to your hand to land.

3.       Newer features

The Spark is a newer drone from DJI. This comes with its perks as it has some software features that is not currently on the Mavic Pro. Two of these features are, ShallowFocus and new Pano (panoramic) modes. The ShallowFocus feature allows you to take photos which a much more shallow depth of field, giving a blurry background and focused subject. The new Pano modes will help to create much larger and detailed panoramic photos.

Advantages of the Mavic Pro

1.       Size

Wait, what? Size is the advantage of the Spark, is it not? Yes. The spark is smaller, especially when the drone is ready to fly. However, the Mavic Pro has folding arms which, when transporting or in storage, makes it not that much larger than the Spark. Therefore, if storage or carry-on space is concerned, the Mavic Pro is not at that big of a disadvantage. Furthermore, even though it may be larger, with better obstacle detection in terms of being able to detect smaller and further away obstacles, this allows it to also travel through tight spaces as well.

2.       Professional

It is no doubt that the Mavic Pro is a professional level drone. With the need of a dedicated, and better controller (if you buy the Fly More combo for the Spark) which also has a better operation range. The Mavic Pro can steer and navigate far more nimbly than the Spark. If you need accuracy and precision in your shot, the Mavic Pro will do this better and more reliably than the Spark.

3.       Faster Speed and Battery life

If you don’t think drone speed is important, chances are you may be content with the Spark’s 31MPH as most likely you won’t need to be chasing anything that fast with this drone. However. the Mavic Pro can go up to speeds of 40MPH rendering it better at chasing, say a moving car. It is also important to note, if you need to activate obstacle avoidance, the drone’s speed will fall to 22MPH and 7MPH respectively.

The battery life is also better on the Mavic Pro with advertised fly time of 27 minutes and 16 minutes for the Spark. In our tests, we got flight times of approximately 23 minutes and 12-13 minutes.

4.       Video Quality

Last and to many, the most important is the 4k video quality of the Mavic Pro. This is a big step up from the 1080p sensor of the Spark. Although the Spark’s video quality is great, if you push the little fellow to the limit and want to have more flexibility in post-production, it will not fair well. With so much more resolution, the Mavic Pro will capture more detail.

The Mavic Pro also has a 3axis Gimbal as opposed to the 2axis Gimbal of the Spark. Meaning you will get smoother video on the Mavic Pro.

We would like stress that the Spark, in non-windy and regular conditions, still produces an amazing video quality.

Fly More Combo

The Fly More combo is necessary if you plan to fly your drone for extended periods of time. With the short battery life of drones, the extra batteries in the kit will allow you to extend your flight sessions. To charge these extra batteries, the battery charging hub is also vital. Furthermore, the extra propellers are important as you cannot fly these drones if you break all your spares. Both kits will also come with a nice carry case. One big difference however, is that the Fly More combo for the Spark will come with the controller that is not included with the drone.

Both DJI drones are compelling devices. If after reading all the pros and cons above, you are still unsure, I would suggest going with the DJI Spark. The Spark is a cheaper and simpler entry into the drone world. If you do not have any specific expectations of a drone, the Spark’s video quality and user-friendliness will satisfy all newcomers. If you are also extra tight on space and would like the most compact drone, the also go with the Spark.

The Mavic Pro on the other hand, is for intermediate and even professional users. With its speed, and amazing 4k sensor, the Mavic is a content creator’s dream. It packs many professional features into a package only slightly smaller than the Spark when folded up.

What is the best flagship phone right now?

Nowadays phones are becoming more featured filled which makes it hard to judge what is the absolute best or the king of smartphones. That is why we will help to break it down for by topics so you guys can know which phone is best for you!

Weight and size

Winner: LG G6

Runner-up: Huawei P10 Plus

At 165g and 163g both these smartphones are the lighter option if you worry about weighing down your pocket! The LG G6 however is not that thin at 7.9mm whereas the Huawei P10 is a razor thin 7mm compared to the others.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy S8+

With all the other displays either IPS or SLCD displays, the Samsung S8+’s AMOLED display stands out and wins hands down. The Samsung S8+ has deepest blacks and a high color range, making the photos and colors really pop out. Having an AMOLED display has also allowed the Samsung S8+ to have an always on display as the black pixels drains very little power. Not to mention with the highest screen-body ratio, the ‘infinity’ display of the Samsung is absolutely beautiful.

A notable mention however is the SLCD display of HTC. These displays draw little power and therefore makes the battery life notably better.

The Sony also has the highest resolution but at such a high pixel density, it is barely noticeable to the naked eye.

Winner: P10 Plus

Runner-ups: XZ Premium, U11 and S8+

With the latest and greatest in octa-core processors, these phones are using the latest CPU and chipset making them formidable in the performance department. Switching between apps and multi-tasking is buttery smooth and with very little issues. Although the LG G6 uses the older quad core processors, the performance was still very good although there can be hiccup once in awhile.

The Samsung S8+ takes advantage of this the most with the long aspect ratio allowing for better multi-window applications. If you like to play games with intensive visual graphics, the P10 Plus is a great choice.

Storage and Memory

Winner: Samsung S8+

Runner-up: HTC U11

6GB RAM on a mobile phone is unimaginable a few years back. Only desktop and laptop computers with 6GB of RAM ruled the world. Now Samsung and HTC’s offerings have 6GB options for their 128GB storage models. This makes them the clear winners in this category. All the other phone still come with at least 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage which is more than enough for most of us.

Winner: Samsung S8+

Runner-ups: P10 Plus, LG G6

Cameras are still a very competitive topic between phones with the camera quality being good enough to use on a day to day basis. One camera that does stand out is the Leica co-produced camera on the Huawei P10 Plus. With Leica’s expertise, Huawei has had a great consultant in developing one of the best phone cameras on the market. Huawei’s camera is a dual camera system taking advantage of different apertures and features allowing the camera to take better photos overall. LG G6 also does this by having one lens have a wider angle and another with a tighter angle.

However some have argued that single camera systems outperform the dual by putting all the effort into just one lens. Here in our personal tests, we definitely feel the Samsung S8+ has one of the most amazing photos.

It is also important to note that all these phones have image stabilization, reducing the amount of blurriness in your photos. Although the Sony XZ Premium only has electronic stabilization which is inferior to the optical image stabilization featured in the rest.

Battery Life

Winner: Huawei P10 Plus

Runner-up: Samsung Galaxy S8+

With a 3750mAh battery, the Huawei P10 Plus has the potential to last the longest. Huawei also has kept the Android software as minimal as possible to help it on this edge as well. The Samsung Galaxy S8+ follows closely with a 3500mAh battery. With the AMOLED display we have found using a black background, it helps save batteries and in our tests, even out performing the Huawei P10 Plus at times.

However, all these phones can safely and easily last a day. With all the manufacturers focusing on battery draining issues and as well as more efficient chips being used. Unless you need a phone as a power user to last longer, none of these phones will have any issues with battery life.

Are you looking for a good DSLR but don’t want to break the bank and still take great photos?

The Canon 77D offers an extremely great value for a DSLR up-to-date package. The 77D is Canon’s new (launched this year) entry level DSLR targeted at new and casual photographers. This camera is a great example of how cheap DSLRs nowadays can manage amazing features and image quality.

To start with, the camera comes with more megapixels than other similar offerings like 70D with 24 MP and a new image processor, Digic 7. This combines to produce better pictures and end results.

However, what will benefit new photographers or amateur photographers the most would be the 77D’s 45 AF points which is a huge step from the 70D’s 19. This makes the focusing more accurate and more importantly makes regular photo taking more carefree as you do not have to go back to check your photos to see if you manage to focus or not because with 45 AF points, more than likely the 77D managed to get what you want in focus. With higher ISO capability as well, the 77D can manage to take photos in even darker conditions than the 70D.

Video is also upgraded to 60fps to allow for a more buttery video and more options when editing your videos. With video in DSLR becoming more and more important, this was a much-needed upgrade.

One of the best features in our opinion is how light the 77D is. At 532g, it is almost lighter than the 70D counterpart by 50%. In our opinion, this is commonly overlooked as we do not consider this often in our purchases. However as DSLRs are already a more bulkier choice of a camera, when your camera is light this allows for more extended periods of use and it becomes less of a hassle or burden to carry around especially when traveling.

Another great feature that may not seem important is its wireless capabilities with WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC. Although the 70D has WiFi, allowing for wireless transfer of photos to your phone or your PC, the 77D includes NFC and Bluetooth for more convenient, faster and on-the-go transferring capabilities. Either tap your phone to begin the transfer, or pair your phone to the camera via Bluetooth to sync photos as well as image data like geolocation.

The one disadvantage of the 77D is that it is not weather sealed. Although this may be a deal breaker for some, many of you will probably never require weather sealing on your camera.

So who is this camera for? With upgrades in the image and video quality side, the 77D has become one of the most amazing options for consumer grade DSLR. Its low price does not come with low end specs or features. This camera would be amazing for a new photographer beginning their shooting adventures, or for someone to upgrade from their outdated bulkier DSLR. This would also be a great summer gift especially if your family or friends are taking vacations.

The new charge has a larger screen for better viewing and interchangeable bands. These are great quality of life changes to the device. It is already a standard for fitness scoring and is a great addition to the Charge 2. Guided breathing on the other hand helps to calm you down after or before exercises. It continuously tracks your heart and guides you on how deep and quickly you breathe. This sort of exercise also destresses and helps you relax.

For those that wish to go on extended hikes (or just prefer not to have a watch to charge every few days) the Fenix in our tests has lasted for five weeks as a watch and up to 50 hours of hiking and sport.

The build quality of the Garmin is sturdy and can withstand a lot more with its stainless steel frame. You can even upgrade the Gorilla Glass 4 display to a Sapphire one.

Hottest bluetooth speakers comparison

Bluetooth speakers are slowly becoming an everyday device for many. The simplicity, the convenience and the portability is what makes this category so attractive. With the booming demand and with more people buying these, companies have invested a lot of money to create better Bluetooth speakers aiming to become the ultimate in portable convenience. Today we will explore the best Portable Bluetooth Speaker options available to this day as each seem to have their own niche, own specialty. Of course we will take into account cost!

Best Waterproof Option

The JBL Charge 3. The Charge from JBL has always been an amazing series with improvements with every new release. This great sounding speaker has just been updated to the third generation and with this release comes IPX7 certifies waterproof protection. Now you can even submerge the speaker underwater without worry. Now you don’t have to fret bringing it out for an outdoor pool party!

Value for Money Option

Although we just talked about the newer sibling, the JBL Charge 2+ is still a superb option. Still one of the better sounding options as well as having built-in speakerphone capabilities. It is loud, has a strong bass and doesn’t distort much either at high volumes. It also comes water resistant (if you want waterproof check above) and doubles as an external charger for your mobile devices. With so many features and with a recent price cut due to the Charge 3 launch, this is your best bang for buck buy!

The Party Starter Option

I promise this will be the last JBL choice on this list. It was hard considering the wide variety JBL is bringing to the stage! The Pulse is the premier choice for JBL with much of the great features of their other speakers such as being splashproof, great sounding, good battery and speakerphone capability. However the feature that truly sets this product apart from not just JBL’s but all other speakers on the market is the amazing LED ‘pulse’ lights that light up to the beats of your songs. A party starter, an ice breaker and a hype generator! If you want to stand out, this is the option for you.

Best Sounding Option

Now I know this is entirely subjective in many cases, but I believe I can speak for the average consumer that the UE Boom 2 is one of the best sounding portable Bluetooth speakers on the market right now. Improving on the previously top 3 options in 2015, UE keeps the same formula but improves the sound and the waterproofing on the second generation. The sound on these little buggers is truly staggering. Of course if you go will the less portable MegaBoom version the bass may be thicker, I would argue the portability you sacrifice won’t be worth it.

Best Looker Option

Looks may not be important, but to some, they want their speaker to furnish and decorate their home. Or when taking it out, turn eyes. This is exactly what the B&O S3 speaker achieves. With a beautiful design, this speaker will sink into any interior design setting. Do not think it is all looks however. Utilising B&O’s sound technology, the company has brought forward not only one of the best looking speakers but one that can fill a small room with beautiful sound.

For a more portable option however, I would also suggest the B&O A1 is another beautiful looking speaker. Hook the strap onto your backpack and you immediately have the attention of those that place care on looks. Again using the sound technology from B&O, the company has built an excellent sounding portable option.

The Ultimate Option

The Harman Kardon Aura Studio has seen many years of iteration. This latest version has Bluetooth speaker capability with built in tweeter (no more sound sticks). Although definitely not as portable, this speaker packs a punch and looks great in any home with its transparent shell. This speaker is the best of all worlds, and besides waterproofing, achieves much of what we have discussed today.

Is the Fitbit Blaze the top smart wear for 2016?

Fitbit has a strong presence in the fitness tracker market. The new Fitbit Blaze is a fresh release that is more stylish, sophisticated and comfortable compared to it's other siblings, the Fitbit charge HR and Fitbit surge. Some fashion changes include the ability to interchange the watch bands between leather, steel and silicon. There are numerous improvements and differences in this new release and we will look over them shortly.

The Fitbit Blaze simply has a more attractive design. The watch can be worn anytime when working out or even casually.  The 1.25 inch OLED display is very colorful, bright and easy to read undersunlight. There are 3 physical buttons to go with the touchscreen compared to one single button on the Fitbit charge. The device is designed to be fully water resistant against rain and sweat but not suitable for those who spend a lot of time in water.

Just like other Fitbit smart wears, the Blaze tracks daily activities, counts steps, monitors heart rates, detect your sleep and these data are readily available in the Fitbit app. The heart rate monitor has similar accuracy like the Fitbit surge.

This device features an exercise mode that tracks running, walking, biking, hiking and log work out activity if the duration is over 15 minutes. For those who likes to receive alerts quickly, the Fitbit Blaze has notification for calls, text and calendar.

Unlike the Fitbit surge, the Blaze unfortunately does not have a built in GPS function. However, it is able to connect and use the GPS feature of a smartphone if brought along together.

One of the distinct features of the Blaze is the Fitstar. It's a program that shows the user how a workout or warm ups can be performed by showing gif like animations.

Surprisingly the Fitbit has an amazingly long battery life of 5 days which lasts almost as long as the Fitbit surge. To charge the Blaze, the device is popped out and placed in a separate housing case.

There are other interesting features including adjustable profiles, multiple sport profiles as well as silent alarms. Here is a quick comparison between Fitbit Blaze, Fitbit surge, Fitbit charge HR if you are looking at which one to get:

Image HTML map generator

Overall, the Fitbit Blaze has a vastly improved design and features. The price is also very attractive where it is significantly less than the Fitbit surge. It is definitely a great choice for those who want a beautiful looking watch that has fitness tracking features.

Quick Budget Smartphones Comparison and Review

Many of us will look for the latest, shiniest, most powerful smartphones. However, there are also many that look for a budget phone with the best value. We have narrowed down to a list that deserves attention and will perform a quick comparison to help you make a better decision. In this article, we will compare the following devices:

Smartphone Name

Launch Date

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2

From £107.99

Huawei P8 Lite

From £119.99

Nexus 5X

From £177.99

OnePlus X

From £184.99

iPhone SE

From £349.99

Here is a quick table comparison between the devices:

Display: OnePlus X

The OnePlus X is the only budget smartphone that features a Full HD AMOLED panel 1080x1920 display. The AMOLED allows for very deep and true blacks which are very noticeable. The contrast is also very high and colors are very saturated on the display. However, if you are outside a lot, alternatives like the Nexus 5X or iPhone SE may give a better viewing experience under broad daylight with its IPS LCD display screen.

Appearance: iPhone SE

Apple is well known for its luxurious and stylish design of the phone. The aluminum made iPhone SE despite using the previous iPhone 5 frame still delivers a beautiful look especially in new colors such as Rose Gold. If you prefer Android phone, the OnePlus X which is made of glass with metal frame that has micro cuts also gives a very premium look and feel. If you do not like plastic, you can skip the Nexus 5X. Other phones such as Huawei P8 lite has a full metallic body but plastic on the side.

Lowest Price: Xiaomi Redmi Note 2

Clearly, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 stood out among its competitors in terms of price. The device not only has the lowest price among the budget phones but also has one of the best specifications in this relative comparison.

Memory: OnePlus X

If you want large memory, OnePlus X clearly stood out as the top choice. The device has 3GB of ram with an expandable storage slot of 128GB. If you are looking for high storage space, the iPhone SE is certainly very limited and costly in this aspect.

Battery Life: Xiaomi Redmi Note 2

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 has the longest battery life in relation to other devices at 3060 maH.

Best Camera: Nexus 5X

We have narrowed down to the iPhone SE and Nexus 5X since their hardware came from the more popular higher end flagship models, the iPhone 6 and Nexus 6P respectively. Apparently, the Nexus 5X did better in outdoors and selfies while the iPhone SE outperformed in close ups, low light and night time. When looking at the price together, the Nexus 5X is the clear winner.

Final Verdict

There's no single phone which is a clear winner in all areas but OnePlus X did fairly well in several including memory and display aspect. If you are looking for premium design look and feel with good camera, the iPhone SE is highly recommended. If you are just strictly looking at price, Xiaomi Redmi beats them all.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ80: pocket-sized but feature-packed

Helloooooo TZ80! The newest member of the ever popular TZ family. The TZ80 is the sibling to the previous TZ70 that was so highly regarded as one of the best bang-for-buck, all-round point and shoot cameras. So what is new and should you get the new TZ80?

The most noticeable difference is the grip design as it now protrudes a little further and is designed in a way that makes the camera easier to hold and handle.

Besides this subtle change, the TZ80 bears much resemblance to the TZ70 which has a proven layout and size combination.

Why TZ80 when Smartphone?

Smartphones will always have one limitation. Due to the thin profile of phones, it is impossible to add optical zoom without seriously affecting the bulk of the device. As such this is where point and shoots still shine brightly.

The TZ80 carries over the 24-720mm f/3.3-6.3 lens from its predecessor which allows it to be extremely versatile. From a wide angle to a telephoto zoom focal length, the TZ80 can do it all.

The TZ80 even as an AF Macro mode allows it to focus at a distance also of 0.03m at 24mm allowing you to take close up photos with nice bubbly backgrounds. At the same time you could then switch it back and use the point and shoot as a landscape shooter.

What are the other bells and whistles?

The new TZ80 comes with a touch screen (finally) which comes in much more handy than you would expect on a device like this. You can point on an object on the screen to select it for focus, changing settings is a breeze and browsing pictures is smooth. Also, TZ80 has amazing post-focus function that allows you to decide what to focus after you've taken the photo.

Wi-Fi is also built in for quick and easy wireless transfers to your phone for that Instagram speed.

Image Quality

The TZ80 has a 1/2.3 inch sensor, taking photos with a resolution of 18.1 mega-pixels. The images from this device were beautiful, with great colors, contrast and clarity. It is a very consistent shooter and never fails to make me smile when I look back at the photos taken.

What else?

The TZ80 has a few special features that help to make capturing the perfect moment easier. For example, the TZ80 can take rapid burst shots which you can then extract individual 8-megapixel frames from. TZ80 also has a Lytro-esque post focusing system. This allows you to shift the focus of the picture during post processing. These amazing features were unavailable on the TZ70.

4K Photo & Video

The last greatest upgrade of the TZ80 is the capability for 4K. Like the GH4, the TZ80 can capture 4K video which we believe will quickly become the standard for video capture resolution. This means that the camera is future proof to when 4K televisions become more affordable, allowing you to re-watch your beautiful memories at full resolution on your TV!

Final Verdict

Ultimately, the TZ80 is a camera multi-tool that has many functions and features as well as a wide and versatile lens that allows it to be used whenever. This is the main reason of a point and shoot. Something small enough to carry without burden and something that is versatile enough that can account for all situations and requirements. The TZ80 meets all these conditions at a great and affordable price. It is a camera that will last you a long time and is great to have in the drawer for any situation be it travel, event or casual snaps!

Samsung listened to our prayers with the Galaxy S7/ S7 Edge

Hallelujah! With Samsung's announcement of the S7 and S7 Edge, we have finally been given with what we have all been asking for. At first glance, the new S7 seems like a small iPhone 6 to 6s-esque update as the S7 and S7 Edge may not have brought anything new to the table. However this update may be what everyone has been waiting for (sometimes even against the norm for mobile updates these days). Let us explore further!

Point 1 — Bigger battery

Thank you Samsung. Thank you for not sacrificing the importance of my phone lasting the day for an extra mm in thinness. Too many manufacturers these days are foregoing a bigger battery for a hair’s more thinness. The S7 and S7 Edge is 7.9mm and 7.7mm thin, whereas the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge 6.8mm and 7mm respectively. Is this a bad thing? No. The S7 and S7 Edge actually feels nicer in the hand which we personally believe is partly due to this. Nonetheless, the main point here is this:

Galaxy S73000 mAh vs S6 - 2550 mAh

Galaxy S7 Edge3600 mAh vs S6 Edge 2600 mAh

I say again, thank you Samsung! Although a significant increase in battery capacity from S6 to S7, the Edge is definitely the star in this category with an outstanding 3600 mAh battery. Of course we would have to do field testing with the new “Always-On” display, but just from this increase alone, I am excited to try this product.

Samsung have claimed this increase is due to new self-made malleable batteries. Neat.
Let's hope the new iPhones and future phones will follow this trend. Fingers crossed.

Point 2 — Camera bump

Every year we hate the camera bump. It is in every single Samsung Galaxy review. Every review we talk about how much we hate the camera bump. This year they have considerably changed the design to make the bump much smaller, and much less concerning. Could it also be because of the increased thickness? Either way, hats off to you Samsung, finally.

Point 3 — Expandable storage

Last notable change is the re-introduction of expandable storage. Especially for Android users who have and usually prefer much more customization and are often power users. This was a much needed revival after the drought in the S6 and Note 5 series. Although my S6 never really ran into storage issues soon enough, at least now with the S7 we won’t have to be so wary about our storage getting full.

All in all, Samsung’s new S7 and S7 Edge is a very welcome update to their premium Smartphone line. With improvements we have been asking for since S5 and keeping all the beauty and features from the Samsung Galaxy S6 that we loved. However, now more than ever I expect innovation in Samsung’s next phones.

Xiaomi Mi 5 v.s. Samsung Galaxy Note 5

Xiaomi, proclaimed Apple of the East has unveiled its latest flagship mobile release during the MWC 2016 in Barcelona, the Xiaomi Mi 5. With an incredibly sleek design and built as well as top of the line hardware specifications, there's no doubt Xiaomi has made clear to the public Mi 5 will be a tough contender in the smartphone arena especially against iPhone 6, S7 and even the Samsung Galaxy Note 5. To prove their point, the Xiaomi Mi 5 has garnered over 14 million registrations before its first day of sale in China on Mar 1st.

Despite Mi 5 powerful specs and beautiful design such as beveled back sides and curved metal frames, a lot of these design cues are actually borrowed from Samsung Galaxy Note 5 such as exterior look. Some even say the hand feel is also reminiscent to Note 5. Upon looking closely at the specification, the two smartphones are almost identical in every way except the processor, optical image stabilization feature and price.

The Note 5 features a slightly larger dimension measuring at 153.2 x 76.1 x 7.6mm while the Xiaomi Mi 5 is 144.6 x 69.2 x 7.3mm. Due to the larger size, the Note 5 weighs 171 grams and the Mi 5 weighs 139 grams. For display, while both have touchscreen and multi-touch, the Galaxy Note 5 beams with Super AMOLED display while Xiaomi Mi 5 beams with IPS LCD. The primary and secondary camera specifications are also very similar in terms of megapixels, aperture size, video resolutions, max photo size, camera flash but there are some minor differences in other hardware and software features. In fact, the Galaxy Note 5 has a higher secondary camera megapixel compared to Xiaomi Mi 5.

In terms of memory and storage as well as battery, there's almost no difference between the two devices such as battery life where they both have 3000 maH. However, the Galaxy Note 5 supports wireless charging whereas the Xiaomi Mi 5 does not. Additional Specifications like Audio, Sensors, and Wi Fi are also the same across the two devices.

Despite many similarities between Note 5 and Mi 5, there are also some difference worth mentioning such as the processor and cellular network. The Xiaomi Mi 5 features the latest Snapdragon 820, 4-core, 1.8 & 1.6 / 2.15 & 1.6 GHz and the Note 5 utilize the Exynos 7420, 8-core, quad-core 1.5 & quad-core 2.1 GHz. In terms of cellular network, the Xiaomi Mi 5 supports dual sim and the Note 5 supports only a single Nano Sim.

With everything else looking so similar if not the same inside and outside, there's no reason one should not consider Samsung Galaxy Note 5 when looking at Xiaomi Mi 5.

Step Over, GoPro: Yi Action Camera is Here

Do you know what this is?

This is the Yi Action Camera and your wallet will thank you for it.

For the last few years, GoPro has been the name on the lips of every DIY filmmaker out there- specifically, GoPro Hero. The legendary action video camera has been adopted by everyone from Youtubing mountain bike stars to amateur filmmakers looking to switch up the way they make movies. But for the first time since GoPro Hero release, a serious competitor- the Yi Action Camera has finally arrived, fresh from the minds of the Chinese Smartphone company Xiaomi.

So, we’re taking a look at what this hot new competitor has to offer. The first and probably most important difference is the price, which could very well launch the Yi into the hands of consumers all over the world. The GoPro Hero costs around 812 RMB($130) and the Yi camera costs less than halfofthat at 399 RMB ($64). This kind of price gaphas many tech outlets pretty excited, as the possibility of a genuinely competitive action camera market is looking more and more like a reality.

Of course, as anyone who’s bought a knockoff smartphone will know, a low price doesn’t actually mean anything. But the Yi’s specs look set to eclipse the basic model of the GoPro Hero. According toa blog post from Xiaomi (brilliantly, one of their demonstrated uses for the camera involved strapping a cat into a harness and having it run about with the Yi attached to it’s back, which is a video I would totally watch).

Their new release will come with the ability shoot videos at 1080p and 60 frames per second thanks to a 16MP camera that comes with the coveted Exmor R BSI CMOS image sensor, which was created and cultivated by Sony. Compare this to the GoPro basic model, which offers 1080p at just 30 frames per second with a 5MP camera. The Yi Action Camera might have taken some inspiration from it’s GoPro counterpart, but it looks like it might well overtake the Hero with stats that good. And, with a price that’s less than half of the GoPro Hero, it seems likely that consumers well start heading in the Yi’s direction. Take a look at these comparison shots from the GoPro and the Yi if you need convincing that a camera this cheap can produce results that good:

While the basic model of the Yi doesn’t come with the equipment usually required to get the most out of an action camera, for a minimal price bump, you can pick up the travel edition which comes with the now-eponymous selfie stick.

Xiaomi have been looking at taking a shot at the American market over the last year or so, mainly with the introduction of lines of household electronics, but the Yi could mark their first major success in the USA. In the future, they’re apparently hoping to help their customers benefit even further from their products by creating a bunch of interconnected releases that work in harmony with each other. If they can keep the prices as low as they have with the Yi, I think Xiaomi could be a name to watch out for.
